Mito-What? Walk/Run
What is a "Mito-What?" It is the name for an annual UMDF fundraiser that gets your attention and is a great way to advertise our effort. The First Annual Mito-What? 5K Fun Run and 10K Race was held in July, 1996, in Santa Barbara, California. It was designed to educate people about and raise money for mitochondrial diseases. Organized by Tami and Paul Monson and other UMDF members who were formerly PALS in California, the event was an outstanding success.
Mito-What? - California
The 4th Annual "Mito-What?" 5K Walk-Run/10K Race FUNd-raiser will be held on Saturday, June 5, 1999 in Santa Barbara, CA. This is a professionally run event to benefit the United Mitochondrial Disease Foundation's research efforts toward a cure. It is a fun event for the whole family that benefits this very worthy cause. It takes place along a scenic beachfront course, followed by a first class buffet. If you would like to participate, lend your support or simply make a donation, please contact Paul or Tami Monson at (805) 967-5019 or via e-mail at ptmonsn@aol.com. See you there!

The California Mito-Meet:
The California Mito-Meet, held in 1996, was a meeting of California families who have been affected by mitochondrial illness. UMDF members in California sponsored the Meet, and we had a turnout of 12 families for a total of nearly 50 people. We picked a city in the middle of the state so no one would have to drive more than a few hours.

We had a wonderful time getting acquainted. We have so much in common with each other we can be a real support to each other. A central point of discussion was how to achieve this on an ongoing basis even though we are spread out over a large area. We were also fortunate to have to have a doctor of two of the kids in attendance. He told us about the research he is doing and answered questions from parents. His wife is a pediatrician and was also able to answer questions.
I wonder if this would work in other areas? We are so spread out making contact difficult, yet we have so much in common. Would you like to organize a Mito-Meet for your area? For more info contact Mark Fleming.
